Save Money On Your Wedding Invitations

June 27, 2011

With an average wedding costing almost $25,000, many couples turn to cheap wedding invitations to help keep costs down or free up more money for big-ticket items like the reception and the photographer.

Following some tips below to save money on your wedding invitations:

  1. To avoid ordering excess invitations, make the guest list first.
  2. While it was once considered proper etiquette to mail your invitations in two separate envelopes, it’s not necessary today.
  3. To save on postage, use a postcard for the RSVP or ask people to reply by telephone.
  4. Avoid expensive engraving. Regular printed wedding invitations can be just as nice for a fraction of the price!

Tips for DIY wedding invitations:

If you’re searching for cheap wedding invitations, you may wish to take the “do it yourself” approach. Contrary to popular belief, homemade wedding invitations don’t have to look like cheap wedding invitations. For example, you can purchase the following special touches at almost any craft or stationary store:

  1. Vellum
  2. Faux wax seals
  3. Shear chiffon ribbon
  4. Pressed flowers
  5. Small metal charms
  6. Don’t go crazy with the fonts. Graphic design experts recommend using two fonts on your wedding invitation: a script for the headings and a traditional font for the body copy.
  7. Make sure the text is readable. Generally, a 10 or 12 point type is recommended for maximum legibility.
  8. If you’re not sure what to say, search online for suggestions regarding wedding invitation wording.
  9. Proofread your work. You’ll want to avoid embarrassing typographical errors at all costs.
  10. If you’re pressed for time and have friends or family who live nearby, considering throwing a “pitch in party” to ask for help getting ready for your special day. Put on some festive music, purchase an assortment of snacks, and have your guests help you assemble your homemade wedding invitations in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it alone.

Save money tips for emailing wedding invitations:

If your wedding is very small and informal, you may be wondering if email wedding invitations are a good way to save money. While it’s true that a number of sites offer free and convenient ecards, relying on email to announce your special day just isn’t a good idea. Consider the following points:

  1. Your email may inadvertently be delivered to someone’s spam folder.
  2. You might not have current addresses for all of your guests.
  3. Some guests may not be online or check their email on a regular basis.
  4. In addition to announcing the basic details of your wedding, an invitation serves as a memento for friends and family to remember your special day. You can’t save an email wedding invitation in a scrapbook!
  5. Sending email wedding invitations is a huge deviation from traditional wedding etiquette.

If you’re on a tight budget, use the Internet to help you plan the other details of your special day. Just remember to stick to the post office for delivering your cheap wedding invitations!

Ideas to Get Your Wedding Invitations With Limited Budget

June 3, 2011

Weddings are expensive, but finding ways to cut costs can be difficult. Here are some great tips for saving money on your wedding invites.

Saving money on your wedding invites is one of the best ways to cut the overall cost of your wedding. These small extras may not seem like much, but when you have several hundred invites, the cost can add up quickly. If you want to avoid making this common mistake, try some of these great tips for saving money on your wedding invites.

Comparison Shop

Saving money on your wedding invites can be very easy when you take the time to comparison shop. Different designs are different prices, so what you choose can make a big difference. Even if the savings from one design to the next is only a few cents, the savings can make a big difference in the overall cost.

If you find a wedding invite that you really like but cannot seem to find it at a lower price, consider looking for one that is similar in design, or try ordering in bulk for a discount. Ordering in bulk will give you plenty of extras, which is helpful in case you decide to add guests at the last minute.

Cutting Out the Extras

Little extras like ribbons, tissue paper, bows, and jackets add up in cost quickly. While they may seem pretty and offer great additions, they really are unnecessary. In addition to the cost of the extras, there may even be additional assembly fees involved with these items. Saving money on your wedding invites can happen really fast when you cut out the extras.

Remove the Reception Card on your shopping list

Reception cards add cost in two different ways. First, you have to pay the extra cost when purchasing them. Second, you have to pay extra shipping cost when mailing them. If your ceremony and reception will be in the same place, or if you have a wedding website, you can cut out the extra cost. You can simply let your guests know right on the invite that the reception is to follow the ceremony, which also helps save you money on your wedding invites.

Try to DIY Your Wedding invitations

Following the steps to DIY your own wedding invites:

  1. Cut out base of invitation using pattern or die-cut. (Note: In this demonstration, Sandi Genovese uses a custom invitation pattern. See Resources for a supplier of custom invitation patterns and dies.)
  2. Fold on the crease lines. Add adhesive to the side tabs, fold up and fasten to the body of the invitation to create the pocket.
  3. Print cards with special wedding information (i.e., directions), then trim all cards to the same width. Vary the heights so that they are graduated sizes when they are sitting inside the pocket.
  4. Print the wedding announcement, trim and double-mat to a size that fits inside the invitation. Wrap the gauzy paper around the matted invitation, overlapping it in the front.
  5. Fasten coordinating ribbon to the invitation, and fasten the matted and wrapped invitation to the top panel (over the ribbon).
  6. Tie the ribbon ends into a bow, trimming any excess ribbon after the bow has been tied.
  7. Cut out reply envelopes if using a custom die or pattern (U.S. mail requires envelopes to measure at least 3.5″ x 5″). Fold on the crease lines. Place adhesive on the inside edges of the bottom flap and fold up to complete the envelope.(Note: Sandi also uses a custom envelope die available from Ellison, in Resources, below.)
  8. Print the reply information onto a card that fits into the reply envelope. Mat the reply card and insert into the envelope.
  9. Slide the filled reply envelope into the bottom pocket with the top envelope flap exposed.
  10. Cut out the invitation envelope with the pattern provided and fold on the crease lines. Place the completed invitation inside and fold the four envelope flaps so that they meet in the middle. Seal with a gold heart sticker.
  11. Be sure to weigh the completed invitation at the post office for the correct postage amount.

It can be quite difficult to tell a professionally printed invitation from one printed at home.

If you want to add a personal touch to your invitations, you can also hand make them. In today’s craft stores you can find a wide variety of beautiful, themed, and elegant papers. You can also find matching ribbons, stamps, stickers, and other notions appropriate for your theme and colours. Make sure to shop around and even checkout your local big box retail stores as they may have a craft section and have lower prices. The possibilities are endless with your own creativity. Guests will surely appreciate the personal touches you have added to the invitations and will not know that they were cost-effective as well.

Another idea for affordable wedding invitations is to design your own invitation and then take it to a print shop. This option may be less expensive than you think. Depending on the season, they may even be able to offer you a discount. Make sure you get an estimate before committing to this route. That will give you an idea of the cost involved and if this is the way you want to go. You could also check out the cost return address labels as this could save you time addressing the envelopes.

Be sure to also check out your local wedding planners and bridal boutiques. They often carry catalogs of wedding invitations. It is possible that you may find a design you like that has been discontinued and you can get a huge discount on or they may have special designs that are marked down. This is another great way to find affordable wedding invitations. Remember to check online as well. There are many sites that cater specifically to weddings and they have beautiful invitations for sale as well. They usually have unique designs or they can help you come up with one that is specific to your theme.

Affordable wedding invitations are out there and they do not have to be poor quality. Take your time while looking around and ask about discounts or specials. You never know what will happen or what you will find unless you ask.
